The company, which sold off radio stations Heart and Galaxy to become a focused music and distribution group, posted interim pre-tax losses of £2.6m against a deficit of £13.1m for the same period last year.

Its music label achieved chart hits with acts including White Lies, Bat for Lashes and the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. The music publishing arm and its wholesale distributor Lasgo Chrysalis both exceeded expectations.

Chrysalis said underlying profits totalled £500,000 for the six months to March 31 against losses of £300,000 a year ago.
