A NEW mobile phone recycling scheme has raised £100,000 for charity.

The Co-op teamed up with Oxfam this Christmas to raise cash to help some of the world's poorest communities.

The scheme has been running in 1,700 Co-operative Group food stores.

It is being expanded to take in 330 branches of Travelcare, which is also part of the Co-operative Group and includes a number of outlets in Huddersfield.

Kirstie Hawkins, of the Co-operative Group, said: "With Travelcare branches coming on board we have over 2,000 outlets, to enable even more people to raise funds for Oxfam."

As mobile phones are likely to have been at the top of many people's wish list this Christmas, Oxfam is urging the public to give their old ones a new lease of life.

They want people to pop into a participating Travelcare or Co-op store in the new year, when they can pick up a Freepost bag to send the phones for recycling.

Ms Hawkins added: "As Santa delivered sacks of new phones and printers we wanted to make sure we got the message across, so people can make a new year's resolution to help Oxfam."
