PLANS have been tabled for a children's play gym at the former Lodges supermarket in Holmfirth.

Developers converting the building's ground and first floors to provide a shopping mall want to transform the two upper floors into a play gym.

Forward Developers, based at Marsh, said the scheme would be "a positive step" for the town.

The children's facility would create three full-time and three part-time jobs.

It would accommodate up to 45 children in the main play area as well as 19 toddlers and eight babies in their own play areas.

There would also be meeting spaces for parents, which could also be used for community events.

Opening times would have to be decided, but the developers envisage it opening seven days a week into the early evening.

In a submission to Kirklees Council, Forward Developers said the facility would be a positive step, adding: "It will bring in employment and enhance an already thriving town."

They said public opinion favoured the scheme as it would benefit children and parents and provide a good meeting place.

It would also complement the newly-named Riverside shopping mall and attract more people to the area.

A decision on the scheme is expected early in the new year.
