Landmark building on the market
ONE of Huddersfield's landmark buildings is for sale at £2.5m.
Standard House, in Half Moon Street, is being sold by Huddersfield property agent Bramleys.
The distinctive building, which once belonged to Standard Fireworks, has more than 20 tenants.
The ground-floor shops are occupied by several long-standing independent retailers.
They include International Fashion, Half Moon Furnishings, menswear store Dawson & Hall and florist Carl Wilde.
Tenants in the first and second- floor offices include Citizens Advice and Huddersfield Town Centre Partnership.
Alex McNeil, of Bramleys, said: "It is a building which produces a very good level of rent from some well-established tenants. It would appeal to both local and national property investors.
"We envisage someone buying it as a long-term investment."
Mr McNeil added: "There have been thoughts in the past that the building would make nice flats, but that market is not there now.'
"It is an unusual building in design and shape.
"I could imagine it appealing as a 'trophy building' to a local investor who wants to own a substantial piece of property in the heart of the town."
Mr McNeil said the present owners, who have not been named, had spent money in recent years to repair the roof and install a new heating system.
"It was sold to the current owners in the late 1980s," he said. "It has not had many owners over the years."
Standard House is actually a collection of two and three-storey buildings. It occupies a triangle of land bounded by Half Moon Street, Sergeantson Street and Upperhead Row.
Standard House was built in the late 19th century as a warehouse.
In the 1930s, the property - Thomas Hirst's wool warehouse - was bought by Standard Fireworks and renamed Standard House.
In 1935, architect Clifford Hickson drew up alterations for the building. These included a covered arcade with marble terrazzo floor, 12 ground- floor shops and a new staircase and lift block in reinforced concrete.
