PEOPLE struggling to make mortgage payments have been urged to seek advice – as figures for Huddersfield showed a rise in repossessions.

A report by the Ministry of Justice showed there were 140 mortgage possession orders made in the town during the fourth quarter of last year – an increase of 11% on the same period of 2007.

Julie Parkin, contracts manager for the Legal Services Commission (LSC) in Yorkshire, said: “The repercussions of the recent economic downturn have led to an increasing number of people in Huddersfield having trouble making their mortgage payments – many of whom are now at risk of losing their homes.

“Getting the right high-quality advice from professionals can help – and our research has shown that those who seek advice with their problems early are able to resolve their issues more quickly before they escalate.”

She said people could get advice on the Legal Aid hotline on 0845 34 54 345.

People on low incomes or benefits could get free advice over the phone on housing matters as well as a range of other legal matters.

The LSC also funds a housing possession scheme at Huddersfield County Court – one of 18 schemes across Yorkshire – which provides free advice to people who have a possession hearing regardless of income or circumstances.

Julie said: “I would urge everyone in Huddersfield who has rent or mortgage arrears to get advice as soon as possible.
