A COMPANY providing services to the engineering sector is expanding its research and development activities.

Service Engineering CNC provides support for smaller engineering firms using computer numerically controlled equipment.

Managing director John Donnelly said that with the demise of many larger engineering companies, the smaller firms were rapidly becoming the mainstream users of advanced CNC equipment in the country.

Mr Donnelly said Service Engineering, which has been based in Clayton West for 15 years, was expanding its R&D programme with support from regional development agency Yorkshire Forward to provide improved precision diagnostics to be used on the various generations of Fanuc CNC controllers – the most widely used.

Fanuc parts sent to the firm for fault diagnosis can now benefit from faster and more accurate procedures as a result of recent research carried out by the company. In a number of cases, this can eliminate the need for an on-site visit.

Said Mr Donnelly: “These developments should be of enormous benefit to the many small and medium-sized enterprises which presently have no on-site maintenance personnel and which are extremely conscious of expensive repair bills in an industry where margins are very tight.

“We are extremely grateful to Yorkshire Forward for the assistance given to us for this work and its awareness of how it can be of value to the many small engineering firms in the region”.
