ECONOMIC activity among Yorkshire firms fell for the fifth month running during September, a survey showed today.

The Purchase Managers’ Index, compiled for the Royal Bank of Scotland, showed a slowdown in business for both manufacturing and service sector firms.

Companies reported a fall in new orders and high costs for energy and raw materials.

Prices of finished products continued to rise, but at a slower pace than during the summer. Lower workloads resulted in another month of job losses, the survey said.

RBS economist Robert Blotevogel said: “Business conditions in Yorkshire and Humber were tough in September, but remained above the UK average for a second consecutive month.”
