SMALL firms in Huddersfield have been urged to sign up to a website to help them tender for government contracts,

More than 123,000 companies have already registered with website Supply2.gov.uk, which gives a database of government contracts for small businesses keen to supply to the public sector.

Suppliers signed up to the site get advice on how best to access government contracts and a free daily e-mail alert notifying them of new opportunities relevant to their business.

Regional minister for Yorkshire Rosie Winterton said: “Every year the government spends many billions of pounds on public sector contracts. It is vital that we actively help small and medium sized firms take advantage of these business opportunities.”

She said small firms often had lower overheads, local knowledge and greater flexibility than large businesses and were frequently able to offer better value for money.

Supply2.gov.uk lists more than 109,000 public sector contracts.
