Firefighters in South Yorkshire involved in a long-running row over shifts have agreed to call off their strike.

The Fire Brigades Union and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service will enter arbitration talks.

Firefighters have staged a series of walkouts over the dispute and were due to take more action next week, but future strikes have been called off after breakthrough talks.

The row erupted over bosses wanting to implement 12-hour shifts, instead of the current combination of nine-hour days and 15-hour nights.

The FBU accused the fire authority of threatening to sack 744 firefighters to force through the changes.

The union offered to move to 10-hour day shifts and 14-hour night shifts, which it said would have less of an impact on working parents and carers.

The authority also agreed to drop conditions attached to an earlier proposal to declare the use of mass dismissal to force through new changes as null and void.

Both sides agreed to immediately involve the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) to agree terms.
