RETAILER John Lewis Partnership reported a 17%-plus rise in sales at its Waitrose stores last week – as shoppers were tempted by food offers.

The 17.4% increase in total sales reflected strong trading in wine, beers and spirits after football fans stocked up on drinks to watch England’s match last weekend.

John Lewis said food sales were boosted by demand for items such as hot cross buns, fish and lamb.

A recently-launched budget range, essential Waitrose, continued to do well, with sales of minced beef and pork sausages up by 28%.

John lewis said sales at its department stores fell by 2% to £47.5m in the seven days to last Saturday. Fashion sales were 13.1% higher, while home ware sales were down by 4.4%.
