A HUDDERSFIELD firm of architects has provided a six-figure facelift for two railway stations on the busy trans-Pennine rail route.

Above & Beyond, based at St George’s Square, has revamped Scunthorpe and Grimsby stations as part of a programme of improvements for the First TransPennnine Express network.

The £500,000 contract included reshaping and refitting waiting rooms, staff rooms and buffet areas with new flooring, lighting and seating. It also introduced new ticket desks.

The 15-strong practice is undertaking a four-year programme to improve stations along the route, which links Huddersfield with the east and west coasts and runs through major cities such as Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Hull and Newcastle.

Martin Booker, of Above & Beyond, said: “The newly-refurbished stations provide a comfortable environment for the travellers and commuters who pack the platforms each day.

“Completing the works while maintaining a full service and avoiding excessive disruption to passengers created some challenges along the way, but the result will make travelling from these stations a much more pleasant experience.”

David Hook, property projects manager at First TransPennine Express, said: “We have a commitment to delivering a high-quality rail service for all our passengers and have seen improvements to stations across the network.

“This investment is great news for Scunthorpe and Grimsby and will increase the level of comfort and improve the surroundings for people who use the station.”

In addition to working with First TransPennine Express, Above & Beyond has designed and built transport interchanges and information centres for South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive as part of a five-year framework agreement.

Above & Beyond was launched in 1999 by founder and managing director Andrew Stoddart – since when it has completed schemes for houses, offices and shops and for clients including South Yorkshire PTE, McInerney Homes, Autodesk and energy company Gaz de France.
