HUDDERSFIELD University’s department of accountancy is the best in Yorkshire.

The department was ranked top in the region and fourth UK-wide in a survey of students.

The accolade comes just months after the department received two bursaries from the West Yorkshire Society of Chartered Accountants in recognition of the quality of its courses.

Wilma Teviotdale, head of the department at the university, said: “This accolade means a great deal to us, coming as it does directly from the students.

“And it all adds to the appeal of the department, which is – from this year forward for an initial period of three years – able to offer two bursaries to our highest achieving first year students through the generosity of WYSCA.”

The first two bursaries were awarded to Simbarashe Makwembere, of Zimbabwe, as the top student in the first year of the BA (Hons) Accountancy and Finance Degree course and Stephen Duerden as the second best student in the first year of the course.

The National Student Survey forms part of the Quality Assurance Framework for higher education.
