The best busniesses are always looking to innovate.

Improving the quality and appeal of products and services and finding ways to increase efficiency and improve processes can all help firms improve their market position and financial strength.

Firms developing and investing in exciting innovations with commercial potential are recognised in the Examiner Business Awards.

The Innovation & Enterprise Award, sponsored by the University of Huddersfield, is one of the major categories in this year’s competition.

The award celebrates new ideas, processes, products, services, technologies and applications that have had an impact on an organisation’s success. Judges will be looking for originality of the innovation, its impact, practicality of its application and the measurable benefits to the business.

Last year’s winner was Control F1, a company working with market-leading clients such as the RAC and Travis Perkins to keep vehicles on the road.

Control F1, based at Bates Mill, Colne Road in Huddersfield, was recognised for its software service including web application and app development, enterprise cloud applications, telematics, “big data” consultancy and technical support.

It was also recognised for more than doubling its turnover, securing external investment, landing its biggest client ever.

A university spokesman said: “The University of Huddersfield is an inspiring institution that prides itself on the quality of its research, teaching, business services and facilities.

“The university’s research activity provides fertile ground for the generation of innovative opportunities with commercial potential and its graduates are amongst the most entrepreneurial in the UK with many high profile successes.

“In keeping with this civic and technical heritage, the university is proud to develop and maintain strong links with regional commerce and industry.

“This award reflects the university’s ongoing vision for its 3M Buckley Innovation Centre, a unique environment to support spin-in and spin-out companies linked to the university to foster growth and economic regeneration within Huddersfield and the region.

“In recognition of its commitment to innovation and enterprise, the University is delighted to sponsor the Innovation and Enterprise Award which celebrates new ideas, processes, products, services, technologies and applications which have had an impact on an organisation’s success.”
