MEMBERS of the West Yorkshire Society of Chartered Accountants have welcomed chartered accountant and barrister Philip Pawson as their president for the coming year.

Mr Pawson took over from Tim Parr, of Baker Tilly, at the society’s annual meeting in Leeds.

Wilma Teviotdale, head of accountancy at Huddersfield University, steps up as deputy president and Charles Hartwell, financial director of Yorkshire Cricket Club, becomes vice-president.

Mr Pawson is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and a consultant in anti-money laundering and anti-bribery legislation.

He gained a degree in accountancy at Leeds Polytechnic, now Leeds Metropolitan University, and later in his career read for the Bar at Newcastle University.

He began working at Robson Rhodes in 1978 and qualified as an ICAEW chartered accountant in 1981. He was called to the Bar in 1999.

During his year in office, Mr Pawson is keen to increase contact with ICAEW members in owner-managed businesses.

He said: “It is sometimes forgotten that nearly half our members work in industry rather than in practice .

“I feel it is important to encourage engagement with them and participation from them in ICAEW’s aims and objectives, given they represent such a large proportion of the chartered accountants working throughout the whole spectrum of businesses across the UK.”
