BUILDING materials supplier SIG reported weaker sales in the UK as the wettest April since records began hit the group’s roofing business.

The Sheffield-based firm, which also supplies insulation products, said turnover in the UK was about 1% lower on a sales per day basis in the period since January 1.

SIG said its exteriors division – which supplies roofing materials to industrial and agricultural sectors – suffered at the hands of the heavy rainfall in April.

The group, which trades from 710 sites across Europe and employs 10,600 people, saw overall sales buoyed by a stronger performance in Germany and France.

SIG said group sales per day for the first four months of 2012 were just under 1% ahead of the previous year.
