HEATING and plumbing giant Wolseley today said it planned to axe another 1,300 jobs amid worsening trading conditions in the USA.
The Reading-based company has already shed 1,700 staff in the USA during the three months to October 31 – on top of 4,650 jobs lost in the previous financial year.
The job cuts so far amount to a third of the workforce at Wolseley’s Stock building supply operation.
Wolseley, which runs the Plumb Center and Build Center brands, said it was taking “swift and decisive action” in light of “challenging” business conditions.
Trading profits in North America fell by 30% during the three months with sales down by 10% in the face of a slowing US housing market and weakening consumer confidence.
