A stressed out chipmunk called Sheamus is looking for his forever home.

Sheamus has been taken in by Heckmondwike pet shop owner Neil Gawthorpe, who says the little creature isn't happy and needs a new, loving owner to take care of him.

Neil, whose shop, Hecky Pets, is in Oldfield Road, said: "We've had him a week now. He has been at a school as part of a farm there. They got two and they ended up with seven.

We have ended up trying to rehome four - Sheamus and three brothers, two brown ones and a white one which is quite unusual.

"Sheamus is very timid - we don't see him. He is in his box most of the time.

"When you move the box he comes out but he's really jittery - he's getting stressed.

"I feel really sorry for him - it's not ideal for him to be in the shop."

Neil said Sheamus got his name from a wrestler, adding: "He was jumping all over and a customer said he was like a wrestler she knew from TV called Sheamus, so we called him that!"

5 things Sheamus's new owner needs to know

Shop owner Mark Gawthorpe chats to Seaumus in his cage in the shop.

He needs space

Neil says: "The ideal set up is a 6 x 4' garden shed with a 6 x 4' aviary so he can go outside. He needs an area where he can sleep and make a bit of a nest. He likes to climb and hang so it needs to be 6ft tall.

"Pipes and tree branches are good -

at the school they had a pipe with a U bend and they were always scurrying around in it."

He's not a fussy eater

Neil says: "A bag of Chinchilla food at £3 pounds lasts 3 to 4 weeks, and he likes monkey nuts, peanuts, mixed nuts and raisins as a treat.

He needs lots of stimulation

Neil says: "He is very inquisitive

and the owner needs to be someone who's got a bit of something about them and is willing to learn. Chipmunks are a very interesting animal to watch and learn from.

He will need plenty of TLC

Neil said: "He's getting more reserved which is a sign of him being stressed out. On a morning when we go in the shop he's sat on his little plinth but when you get closer to the cage he scurries off.

He's tame - and trainable

Neil said: "Any age group can look after a chipmunk. When you put your arm in the cage he would run up it at first. Normally they're quite curious but at the moment he is staying well out of the way and hidden."
