Cash-conscious celebrity Kerry Katona has given the seal of approval to a firm run by a Skelmanthorpe man.

The former Atomic Kittens star and mum-of-five found the perfect way to save money – buying cut-price “out-of-date” food.

Kerry, 34, stocked up online at Approved Food, run by Lindley-born Huddersfield Town fan Andy Needham and business partner Dan Cluderay.

Then she went on Twitter to trumpet her support for the company to her 450,000 followers.

She tweeted: “Got to say I’m sooo impressed with @ApprovedFood. Got all my food the very next morning and saved over £30! Very happy bunny thank you.”

The singer, who previously advertised frozen food store Iceland, was in Huddersfield in May when she helped launch a new business she was involved with, the Popkidz party venue in Marsh.

Andy, 50, of Skelmanthorpe, said Kerry’s tweet was not quite a celebrity endorsement but was very welcome all the same.

“It’s nice that she’s a satisfied customer and that she’s told all her followers about us,” he said.

“We saw on Twitter last week that she had started following us and we asked if she was a customer and she said she was.

“She’s had quite a rollercoaster ride in her life. She’s has five kids and she has to eat like everyone else!”

It’s not the first time Sheffield-based Approved Food has had a brush with celebrity.

Dan Cluderay (left) and Andy Needham, of Approved Food, face a grilling in the Dragons' Den.

In February Andy and Dan, 43, appeared on the BBC’s Dragon’s Den to seek £150,000 investment in their business.

The duo, by their own admission, suffered “brain freeze” and left the den empty-handed.

Dan followed that up by reaching the final of the Virgin Media Business Pitch to Rich competition, where businesses went head-to-head to pitch to Sir Richard Branson for a share of a £1 million prize pot.

The firm came out on top this time, however, securing £100,000 to spend on marketing.

Approved Food also featured on light-hearted documentary Bargain Fever Britain on ITV in March and the second episode goes out on Tuesday (August 25) at 8pm.

In one funny scene former market trader Dan is shown trying to teach young sons Rudy and Jay to sell like market traders.

Approved Food sells food and drink coming to the end of its ‘best before’ date. Not to be confused with ‘use by’ dates, the food may lose some of its quality but will not be harmful.

The firm was set up from Dan’s bedroom in 2008.
