It sounds a simple idea.

Bring together a group of enthusiastic amateur singers and try to form them into a choir.

The format has spawned a hit TV series with celebrity choirmaster Gareth Malone.

And in Huddersfield it has led to the success of the Kirklees Mass Choir.

Now the group is hoping for support from the Examiner’s Wish 2013 project to further their aims.

The group was formed earlier this year thanks to the efforts of Honley Ladies’ Choir musical director Emily Reeves Bradley.

She wanted to do something to raise funds for the Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Fund and came up with the choir idea.

She arranged mass auditions at Greenhead Masonic Hall in Huddersfield and was delighted with the response from hundreds of volunteers.

The result was a massed choir of 250 with a goal of singing on stage in Huddersfield Town Hall in support of the Yorkshire Regiment.

There were mums and daughters wanting to do something together, singers from choirs across Kirklees and many others who had never sung before.

They raised £15,000 with that concert and followed it up earlier this month with another fundraising concert.

Former X Factor winner Joe McElderry joined Kirklees Mass Choir at Huddersfield Town Hall on November 10 in aid of the Poppy Appeal.

The choir was accompanied by The Yorkshire Band of the Royal British Legion.

Mass Choir spokesman Karen Todd said: “Due to the success of the concert Wherever You Are back in March, the Kirklees Mass Choir was born.

“The money from Wish 2013 would go towards funding future concerts and ventures.

“We need to provide sheet music for all the singers and arrange concert venues so that we can continue giving enjoyment to the community and provide quality entertainment to the people of Huddersfield”.
