Hundreds of hardy fell runners braved tough conditions to raise cash for Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team.

Despite cold and windy weather, 200 runners turned out for the annual Trigger Fell Race from Marsden to Edale.

The 23.5-mile race pitted athletes against the elements – and some of the toughest running terrain the Peak District has to offer.

The race – the brainchild of legendary fell runner Nicky Spink and her partner Steve – is supported by several sponsors including Racekit.co.uk and the Langsett-based Bank View Cafe.

Of the 200 competitors who set off from Marsden at 9am, 194 completed the race, with just six runners retiring early due to injury.

First across the line was Macclesfield runner Simon Harding who finished in 3 hours 25 minutes while Jasmine Paris, of Carnethy, near Edinburgh, was the first woman to finish with a time of 3 hours and 52 minutes.

Another runner to finish was Barnsley South MP Dan Jarvis.

Mr Jarvis said: “I’ve been looking forward to the challenge, albeit with some trepidation.

“There’s nothing like a trek across the Peak District to refresh you after a long week in Westminster but I have to confess the amount of preparation I have done has been limited.

Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team do a great job in all weathers helping out those who have got into difficulties.

“That people are prepared to volunteer to do this job and to go out, often at very short notice, is hugely to their credit.

“I look forward to supporting their work again in the future.”

Woodhead team leader Keith Wakeley said: “It was a very tough race, conditions were very difficult underfoot and the low visibility only added further problems approaching Kinder Scout as the competitors were very tired by then.

“However everyone got back safe and well after thoroughly enjoying the challenging event.”
