They have hit a “nappy” milestone at Huddersfield Birth Centre.

Staff at the unit in Huddersfield Royal Infirmary have now seen 4,000 babies safely delivered since it was opened in March 2008.

And new parents who use the unit have praised the relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Two of the latest to celebrate a happy arrival were accountants Diane and Simon Hosey, who had it all figured out when it came to having their second son, Daniel.

They headed back to the Birth Centre for the pool experience just as they had for their first son Benjamin, who is now three.

The Hoseys, from Meltham, who met and both work for Kirklees Council said the pool was the best natural pain relief.

Diane said: “There is something about the water. It really eases the pain and soothes it away and I could not do it without the water.”

She praised the relaxed approach on the unit where couples have spacious rooms and can make their own brews and snacks. There are flexible visiting times and partners can stay over to stay close.

Diane added: “The midwives here really look after you and welcome you like guests coming to stay. They were brilliant.

“It is a lovely environment and my husband was able to stay and be involved right from the very start and was on nappy duty straight away!.”

Daniel, who weighed in at 7lbs 8 oz, was the 4009th baby born on the unit.

The first baby arrived within hours of the centre opening in March 2008.

Sumaya Sajid, who was born at 11.20am on March 10, was a second daughter for mum Shamama Saeed and dad Sajid Majeed.

The unit is designed to enhance choice and to give women a more natural and less medical environment to have their babies.

Head of Midwifery Anne-Marie Henshaw, said: “Our congratulations go to Mr and Mrs Hosey and thank them for choosing us twice now for their big day.”
