Charity workers are celebrating the green light for huge improvements to the Yorkshire Children’s Centre.

A three-storey extension to Brian Jackson House in Huddersfield has been given the go-ahead by Kirklees planners.

It will feature a rooftop cafe, play area and sensory garden and more space for support groups to work.

A nasty smash was narrowly avoided after a car rolled down a steep hill near the the centre of Holmfirth.

The Seat car careered down Cooper Lane early this morning.

But it smashed into a gas box preventing it from potentially rolling all the way down to the busy A6024 Huddersfield Road.

People in Huddersfield are being urged to “dob in a drink driver” as part of a Christmas crackdown across West Yorkshire.

Some details of people caught drink or drug driving, including their age and where they are from, will be released as part of the initiative.

But West Yorkshire Police won’t go as far as naming and shaming those who are charged.

Coroners in Huddersfield are appealing for the relatives of Jonathan Hughes to get in touch.

Mr Hughes, 47, of Trinity Street, Huddersfield, died at home on November 27. There are no suspicious circumstances.

It is believed that Mr Hughes, a member of Huddersfield Chess Club for 18 years, may have a brother named Nicholas in the Sydney area of Australia.

Any relatives are asked to contact Coroner’s Officers Carol Taylor or Steve Hepplestone on 01274 373641.

A gas explosion was averted in Holmfirth this morning when a runaway car hit a gas supply box.

After gas crews made repairs out popped a giant SPIDER! Fortunately, bobbies from Kirklees Rural Neighbourhood Policing Team were on hand to capture the moment.

Lady Colin Campbell has left I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! on “medical grounds.”

The controversial camper was reportedly spotted at the Palazzo Versace hotel on Australia’s Gold Coast - the location where evicted contestants stay during the series. A statement on ITV’s website said: “Lady C has left the jungle on medical grounds.”

The 66-year-old’s exit comes just four days before the show’s final on Sunday. Lady C had been one of the most talked about contestants on the show, famous for her clashes with fellow campers, particularly Spandau Ballet’s Tony Hadley.

Police in Calderdale are appealing for information to help trace a missing vulnerable 29-year-old woman.

Sandra Boulton was last seen at Calderdale Royal Hospital at 11am on Tuesday, 1 December. Sandra is described as a white female, 5”7” tall of slim build with a shaved head. She was last seen wearing a grey top and grey leggings.

Sandra is known to have links to the Huddersfield area, specifically Marsh and Paddock, and has also been known to stay in hotels in Leeds. It is possible she may have travelled across the county.

Inspector Mark Wheeler of Calderdale District Police said; “We are growing increasingly concerned for Sandra’s welfare and would ask for anyone who has seen or heard from her, or who knows where she is now to get in touch.

“I would also speak directly to Sandra, and ask her to contact the police so we know she is OK. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Anyone with information as to Sandra’s whereabouts, or who knows where she is now is asked to contact Calderdale Police via 101 quoting 484 of the 1/12.

Sad news that Jon Hughes, a former supply teacher and a member of Huddersfield Chess Club for 18 years has died aged 47.

His body was discovered at his apartment in Trinity Street, Huddersfield, on Friday. Coroners officers are trying to trace his brother who lives in Sydney, Australia. He was also a long-standing member of the Labour Party.

He had a wide-ranging mind and could shift effortlessly from the history of French and American politics to many aspects of Chemistry in which he had spent two years studying for a PhD before not continuing with it.

Plans for the Plumbers Arms pub, just yards away from Huddersfield Bus Station, to reopen before Christmas have been shelved.

Thousands of pounds have been spent on completely gutting the once popular hostelry and the two floors above it.

Owner Mark Robertson said: “It’s been a bigger job than we thought and we want to get it right. We have had a lot of unforseen stuff to deal with. We will now reopen in February.”

When it does reopen, Mark hopes to entice real ale drinkers with between six and eight brews to choose from.

Traffic

Reports coming in that the roundabout at Ainley Top M62 junction is down to one lane, with delays likely.

But traffic has returned to normal and the accident has been cleared on the M62 eastbound between junction 24 (Ainley Top) and junction 25 (Brighouse).

And the animals are no longer on the road on the M62 westbound between junction 26(Chain Bar) and junction 25 (Brighouse).

An update on the flat fire from last night.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson following the incident in Heron Close, Ravensthorpe, at around 10.20pm.

Fire crews from Mirfield, Dewsbury and Ossett were called to the first floor flat and arrived to find piles of furniture on fire in the entrance.

Firefighters forced their way into the building, while others put a ladder up to the back of the flat to rescue a man through a window.

The 23-year-old is also being questioned in connection with a burglary in Lower Hopton last month.

One lane is blocked on the M62 eastbound between junction 24 (Ainley Top) and junction 25 (Brighouse), because of an accident involving a lorry.

And there are also problems westbound with animals on the road between junction 26 (Chain Bar) and junction 25 (Brighouse).

Things are settling down on the roads after the rush hour.

The A62 Castlegate/Queensgate in Huddersfield is busy but moving around the the A616 Chapel Hill junction.

Wakefield Road in Mirfield is busy but moving at Cooper Bridge roundabout, but there is queuing traffic on the A629 Calderdale Way southbound in Elland before Ainley Top roundabout.

It’s been a nice, bright morning but there is rain heading our way later today.

Huddersfield weatherman Paul Stevens says a band of rain to the north will sink slowly south towards Huddersfield and by the middle of this afternoon going into the evening the rain will be persistent and heavy at times.

Tonight rain continues, heavy at times, leading to local minor flooding issues.

A Slovakian motorist who was over the alcohol limit drove the wrong way along the M62 crashing head-on into another car seriously injuring a police officer inside.

Jaroslav Balaz was driving to Kent on a wet evening in October last year although he had drunk copious amounts of vodka the night before and beer during the day. You can see more here.

A car has rolled down a hill and into a wall in Cooper Lane in Holmfirth.


The car hit a gas box, which is being made safe.
Nobody has been hurt and police think the handbrake may be to blame.

There is heavy traffic on the A644 Wakefield Road in Mirfield from Cooper Bridge roundabout to the M62 junction 25 roundabout.

The A62 Leeds Road in Huddersfield is busy but moving from Three Nuns junction to Cooper Bridge roundabout.

And the A641 Huddersfield Road in Brighouse is busy but moving outbound at the Bethel Street junction.

A man was rescued from the roof of a burning flat in Dewsbury last night.

Firefighters received a call at about 10,20pm of a blaze at the property in Heron Close.

Appliances from Mirfield, Dewsbury and Ossett went to the scene, and found a man had clambered up on to the roof.

He was brought safely to the ground.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Anyone heading west on the M62 may face delays after an earlier accident. There is queueing traffic westbound between junction 20 and junction 18.
