Council workers carrying out a “deep clean” on the B6118 Bellstring Lane/Liley Lane on Wednesday were abused by angry drivers.

The road was shut all day but drivers flouted the closure and work crews bore the brunt.

There were also two fuel leaks on the road and it was described as a “difficult day” by a Kirklees Council manager.

Just had this latest statement from the council on what’s happening over the accident blackspot.

“Our investigations are continuing on this stretch of road to find out what, if anything, can be done to reduce the number of accidents taking place,” says the statement. “Whilst we continue to investigate, the temporary traffic management arrangements will remain in place.”

Thirty-three on-call firefighters at Skelmanthorpe, Featherstone and Ilkley will soon be responding to life-threatening emergency calls at the same time as an ambulance, thanks to the launch of West Yorkshire’s first Emergency First Responder (EFR) scheme.

The pilot scheme is a joint initiative between Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust (YAS) and West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service (WYFRS).

It follows the success of the first scheme which has been running in Humberside and the East Riding of Yorkshire for the last two years and the South Yorkshire scheme which was launched in October 2015.

Skelmanthorpe will be the first station to go live from 23 February, with Featherstone and Ilkley becoming operational in March.

Over 40 Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team members and supporters gathered this week at The Rescue Post in Mytholmroyd to raise a glass to remember the formation of the rescue team which occurred 50 years ago.

During the evening, CVSRT President Bob Uttley read the original minutes from the very first meeting held on 15 February 1966, before cutting the 50th anniversary cake.

The informal celebration marked the official start of the teams Golden Jubilee year.

To help celebrate this monumental milestone, a series of special events have been planned.

There will be something for everyone, so we hope you will join us at one or all of the events to help make the 50th anniversary year a truly memorable one.
