Ex-cadet in compensation claim
A former Army cadet from Huddersfield who was sexually abused and threatened with shooting by a sergeant has launched a legal battle for compensation from the Ministry of Defence.
The victim, now aged 42, who for legal reasons cannot be named, is seeking damages of up to £100,000 for a string of assaults between 1986 and 1991 at Lumley Barracks, Clifton, York.
Sgt Lee McKenna, who worked for the MoD, was jailed at Leeds Crown Court on March 15 2005, after being convicted of two charges of indecently assaulting the former cadet.

Huddersfield’s roads are getting busy. There’s heavy traffic on the A641 Oxford Street outbound at Castlegate and on the A641 Bradford Road near Cobcroft Road . Traffic is also building on the A629 Halifax Road outbound between Bryan Road and A643 Lindley Moor Road close to the Ainley Top Roundabout.

Debris has now been removed from road on M1 Northbound between J39 A636 (Wakefield / Durkar) and J40 A638 (Ossett / Wakefield).

Blow for Town
Huddersfield Town will be without influential midfielder Dean Whitehead for the first three matches of next season.
The 34-year-old has been hit with a Football Association charge of violent conduct.
It follows a clash with Brentford’s Nico Yennaris during the final Championship game of the season at the John Smith’s Stadium last Saturday, when both players were booked.
Broadband update
The first phase of the Superfast West Yorkshire has been completed with more than 67,500 households and businesses now able to access fibre broadband speeds as a direct result of the programme. The second phase will see towns and villages such as Kirkburton, Honley, Flockton and Meltham among those upgraded in the coming months.
Woman attacked
A woman was mugged as she walked in a quiet lane in Huddersfield.
The 52-year-old was confronted by two men as she strolled in the sunshine in Fenay Lane,Almondbury, on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident happened shortly after 2.30pm.
Det Insp Stef Wiseman, of Huddersfield CID, said: “She saw two men as she walked along the road and they spoke to her.
“They suddenly grabbed her and stole a gold chain from around her neck.”
He said: “The woman was unhurt but obviously it was a very unpleasant incident.”
Police are hunting two men both thought to be aged between 18 and 211. Both were slim and about 5ft 6in tall, and were wearing hooded tops.
Anyone with information should contact police via 101.
Mission lottery cash
Huddersfield Mission, which provides support for hundreds of people in the town, has secured £275,000 in funding.

Police appeal
Police are appealing for a witness who helped an elderly gentleman at the Household Waste and Recycling Centre on Nab Lane, Birstall on Thursday 21 April to come forward.
The man officers want to trace had helped the gentleman dispose of garden waste from his Skoda vehicle and it is thought he witnessed the gentleman suffer a serious head injury.
The 82-year-old man is thought to have either fallen or collapsed and was taken to hospital but died later that day. Officers are hoping to speak to the man as a witness to the incident.
The witness is described as white, wearing shorts and possibly aged in his 40s.

Three charged after police operation
Three people have been charged following a pre-planned policing operation in Kirklees.
Megan Atkinson 23, Gary Evans 35 and Lewis Tynan 23 all from Merseyside have been charged with firearms and drugs offences and are due to appear at Huddersfield Magistrates Court today.
A total of eight people were arrested. One person has been bailed pending further enquiries. Four others remain in police custody.
The drama at the BP filling station in New Hey Road, Salendine Nook, was captured on CCTV and also by a passing driver.
M62 crash
A vehicle overturned and landed on its roof following a three-vehicle crash on the M62.The accident took place in lane one of the M62 eastbound carriageway, next to junction 21 (Rishworth Moor) at around 9.30am this morning.A silver Peugeot 106 overturned in the collision.It is not thought that anybody was injured.
Lane one of the carriageway was closed while the accident was cleared by police, causing tailbacks to Stott Hall Farm - the farm in the middle of the M62.All lanes reopened at around 11am.

Things are finally starting to return to normal on Calderdale Way in Elland.
The broken down lorry which had led to massive delays has been dealt with and traffic is starting to ease.
There were delays of more than an hour for some drivers earlier after the lorry blocked the road northbound and police had to set up diversions.

All lanes are now open and traffic has returned to normal, after a broken down vehicle was removed westbound between junction 25 (Brighouse) and junction 24 (Ainley Top).
But there are still delays on Calderdale Way in Elland where a broken down lorry has blocked the road.

There are more problems on the roads. As well as the huge delays on Calderdale Way, there are now reports of trouble on the M62.
One lane is closed and there is slow traffic due to a broken down vehicle westbound between junction 25 (Brighouse) and junction 24(Ainley Top).

There are huge problems on the A629 Calderdale Way northbound caused by the broken down lorry.
Drivers are being diverted, and there are reports of delays of up to an hour.
The vehicle, thought to be a cement mixer, has blocked the road between the A6025 Halifax Road and A6026 Wakefield Road / B6112 Stainland Road.
Traffic jams on the road are one of the reasons campaigners are so concerned about he plans to close Huddersfield’s A&E.
It is the main route to Calderdale Royal Hospital which is where many of Huddersfield’s A&E services would be moved.

And there are problems in Hipperholme. The A58 Halifax Road is blocked in both directions due to an overturned vehicle between the A644 Brighouse Road and the A6036 Bradford Road.

Traffic heading from Huddersfield towards Manchester is being affected by a broken down vehicle on the M62 westbound which has partially blocked a lane between junction 19 (Heywood) and junction 18 (Simister Island). There is congestion back to junction 21 (Milnrow).
There is also slow traffic eastbound on the M62 between junction 26 (Chain Bar) and junction 27 (Gildersome).
And the A629 Calderdale Way northbound in Elland is partially blocked, and there is queueing traffic due to a broken down lorry between the A6025 Halifax Road and A6026 Wakefield Road / B6112 Stainland Road.
