Emergency services were called to Huddersfield Station this morning after a call came in reporting a man was stuck underneath a train.

Crews how rescued the man said it was unclear how the man got under the train.

Fire services from Huddersfield, Rastrick and Cleckheaton were called to the station to carry out the rescue at 6.30am.

The man, thought to be in his 40s, was gently hauled out from underneath by crew members and paramedics have flown him to hospital to be treated. A fire service member said it was unclear how he got there.

Miraculously, his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Minor disruption to continue until 1pm

National Rail say that despite trains being back to running as normal, there will be a knock on effect of disruption until lunchtime.

Officers commended for dealing with incident despite 'horrific injuries'

British Transport Police’s sub-divisional commander for West Yorkshire has commended emergency services for dealing sensitively, calmly and professionally with the incident this morning.

The man is said to have ‘horrific injuries’.

Man's family have been informed and are being supported by officers

This is the latest from British Transport Police:

“Colleagues from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service treated the man, who is aged 54 and from the Huddersfield area, at the scene. He was taken to hospital suffering from serious head injuries, where he remains in a critical condition.

“The man’s family has been informed and are being supported by officers. The incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

Commuter describes incident as 'disturbing'

A man who claims he was on the platform when the incident happened said it was “a very eerie and disturbing incident”.

The commuter was stood a few metres away when the man fell in front of the carriage pulling in at platform 8.

He said:

“I was standing about 15 yards away but didn’t have a direct view of the incident so asked someone closer exactly what had happened. The gent put half a foot over the platform edge just as the train was pulling in, then fell into the space between the train tracks and the platform wall. The driver braked very suddenly. I heard no screaming, no panic, it was a very eerie and disturbing incident.”

TransPennine Express confirm all services running as normal

TransPennine Express, who operate Huddersfield Station as well as the train involved, have made a statement. A spokesperson said:

“Emergency services were called to an incident in the Huddersfield area at around 06:20 this morning involving our Manchester Airport to Newcastle train.

“Services are now running from Huddersfield Station although customers are advised to check before and allow extra time to travel as there may be some knock-on delays.”

Train operator TransPennine Express (TPE) has launched its first refurbished train as part of an overhaul of its entire fleet for customers across the North.

Incident is "not being treated as suspicious"

British Transport Police have confirmed that the man was struck by the train.

A spokesperson said:

“At 6.21am we were called to Huddersfield Station to reports of a person being struck by a train. A man in his fifties was taken to hospital for serious injuries. He remains in a critical but stable condition.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious.”

Man is in LGI with a head injury, ambulance service confirm

The ambulance service have confirmed a man has been taken to Leeds General Infirmary with a head injury.

A spokesperson for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust said:

“We were called at 6.21 this morning to reports of a male in collision with a train at Huddersfield Railway Station.

“We sent our Hazardous Area Response Team, rapid response vehicle, an ambulance and the clinical supervisor. Yorkshire Air Ambulance also attended. The man was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary with a head injury. We are unable to comment at this time on the extent of the man’s injuries.”

Witnesses reported seeing a man step in front of the train

Several witnesses have reported seeing a man step off the platform onto the train line this morning.

Dom Hall said the man stepped off as the train was slowing down to stop at platform 8, and that the driver was luckily already slowing down and able to stop quickly.

He said: “Police sealed off the station within 20 mins.”

The train is believed to have been the 6.18am TransPennine Express service to Newcastle.

What we know so far

Here is what we know so far:

  • Fire, police and ambulance services were called at around 6.30am this morning to reports of a man on the line at Huddersfield Station
  • Emergency services attended and the Station was temporarily closed and all trains suspended
  • Crews from Huddersfield, Rastrick and Cleckheaton fire stations rescued an adult male by gently hauling him out from underneath the train on platform 8
  • The man was in a confused state but did not appear to be suffering any life threatening or serious injuries
  • He was flown to hospital by Yorkshire Air Ambulance
  • The rescue operation took around 45 minutes
  • All lines are now reopen and trains are running as normal

Police incident was not a fatality

Many people have been reporting there was a fatality at the Station - this is not true.

What we know so far is that fire services rescued a man from underneath a train carriage at one of the platforms towards the rear of the station. According to crew members who rescued him, the man was in a confused state and it’s not currently confirmed how he ended up under the carriage.

Fire services said it was “miraculous” he wasn’t more seriously uninjured and that from what they could tell, his injuries did not seem to be life threatening.
