Allotment Volunteers Open Day Sunday, 12 June, from 10am to noon

Can you spare an hour or two? We’re looking for new volunteers to join us at our community allotment. From sitting down sowing some seeds in our potting shed to doing some digging or helping with DIY tasks, there’s something to suit everyone. It’s a great way to learn and to meet people, or just to spend some quiet time outdoors.
If you’re interested in helping out, please come along to our Sunday morning gathering to celebrate Volunteers Week 2016. You can have a look around, join in some practical allotment activities to give it a try, ask questions, and meet other local growers.
Refreshments are provided and we have space under cover in case it rains.

Sir John Harman, former Kirklees Council leader, will open Berry Brow’s 10th carnival at 1pm on Saturday, June 18.
Fancy dress parade celebrating Queen’s 90th b’day.
On the field are many free attractions: Archery, Circus Skills; Sam’s Safari; Spray Painting; Craft activities; Welly wanging; Egg throwing; Tug o’ war; Punch and Judy. Music will be provided by Golcar Silver Band; and Colne Valley Music Centre; in the Arena we have Springers’ Agility Flyball Club; Power Hoopers, Belly dancers; A2D Cheer and Dance Academy and Banghra Dancing.

Kick off at 3pm. Expect extra traffic on Leeds Road, St Andrew’s Road and Southgate. Until 5.30pm on 12 June.

Lockwood Baptist Church, (the venue that provided track side viewing for wheelchairs and people who could not stand by the track, when the Tour de France came through) is hosting a Community Barbeque on Sunday, June 12, at 12:30 pm, to celebrate The Queens’ 90th Birthday.
Food and drink is free.
There will be a display of Old Lockwood as well as a display of “Quotable Quotes” from her Majesty & one or two other famous people.
Weather permitting there will be games in the garden for children,
The event is preceded at 10:30am by a very special service of celebration to which all are invited.
It will be geared towards folks not used to Church services, with people talking briefly about why faith matters to them, as well as hearing some of the things the Queen has said.

Traffic returned to normal on M62 Westbound between J21 A640 (Milnrow) and J20 A627(M) Rochdale.
Crime
Police arrested over 400 people for domestic abuse offences in a special crackdown in West Yorkshire.
They mounted nine days of action in the run up to England’s first match at the Euro 2016 tournament this weekend, as violence offences tend to increase during soccer tournaments.

TRAVEL
One lane closed due to broken down vehicle on M62 Westbound between J25 A644 (Brighouse) and J24 A629 (Ainley Top).
Lane one (of four) is closed, but traffic is coping well from Bradford towards Huddersfield.

A cyclist has been injured in a collision with a car in Huddersfield.
The 62-year-old man was taken to hospital after the incident in Somerset Road, Almondbury.
He is not thought to have suffered serious injuries.
The incident led to the road being closed for some time.

Health bosses have warned of millions of pounds worth of cuts to services in Huddersfield.
They said the ‘wide-ranging’ and ‘potentially controversial’ cuts to Huddersfield NHS services are part of a financial recovery plan and could hit many areas. There is more here.

Police are appealing for information to help trace a missing vulnerable 11-year-old girl.
Keavy Murphy was last seen around 5.25pm yesterday evening at her home in Mytholmroyd.
Keavy is slim with dark hair tied in a pony-tail. She was last seen wearing her Calder High royal blue-school jumper, grey skirt and black shoes. She was carrying a black rucksack with a multicoloured owl pattern on it.
It is possible Keavy may have travelled by train from Mytholmroyd to Halifax. She is known to have friends across Calderdale.
Police are growing increasingly concerned for Keavy, and appeal to anyone who has seen or heard from her since she was last seen, or anyone who knows where she is now to contact police via 101, quoting 1224 of 9/6.

More problems on the M62, this time westbound around Huddersfield.
There is a broken down vehicle between junction 25 (Brighouse) and junction 24 (Ainley Top).

Anyone heading east towards Huddersfield on the M62 may face delays.
An accident has led to queueing traffic eastbound between junction 19 (Heywood) and junction 20 (Rochdale),
All lanes are now open but it will take a while for traffic to return to normal.

It’s one of the truly great legends from Holmfirth.
And now the life of Holmfirth’s famous friendly tiger, Fenella, who lived in the town during the 1940s, is to be brought back to life. There is more here.
Football
Huddersfield Town and Southend United both have reasons to avoid going to a transfer tribunal over midfielder Jack Payne, who is poised for a move to the John Smith’s Stadium.
The Londoner is out of contract in Essex, but because he is under 24 and has been offered a new deal, his current club are due a fee, which is currently under negotiation. You can see more here.

There are still problems on the M62 if you’re heading towards Leeds.
There’s already heavy traffic heading east from Huddersfield and now the westbound lane is blocked on the exit slip road, with slow traffic due to a broken down vehicle at junction 28 (Tingley).

Our story about the house in the middle of the M62 was big news yesterday.
It splits the motorway in half and is arguably the best-known farm in Britain.
When the M62 was built on the moors above Huddersfield in the late 1960s the engineers constructed it around Stott Hall Farm close to Scammonden and between Outlane and Rishworth Moor. You can see more here.

The traffic is still very heavy on the M62 this morning.
There is congestion eastbound around junction 24 (Ainley Top).
The A62 Cooper Bridge Road in Mirfield is busy in both directions.
And there is also heavy traffic on the A629 Penistone Road at Waterloo Bridge.
