Start the New Year among some of the finest scenery West Yorkshire has to offer.

That’s the appeal of countryside volunteers who want people to appreciate the beauty of the local countryside.

The family-friendly walk around Marsden and Marsden Moor takes place on New Year’s Day, starting at Marsden Railway Station at 11am.

The walk through the Marsden Moor Estate, managed by the National Trust, will include spectacular views of Marsden, the Colne Valley, Huddersfield and beyond.

Walkers are advised to wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear.

The walk takes place as part of a series of Christmas and New Year walks and bike rides organised by Pennine Prospects.

Other events include:

a guided walk around the Saltaire World Heritage Site, on Saturday, December 28;

a cyclo-cross event at Centre Vale Park, Todmorden, on December 29; a family ‘Fun Hat and Wig Walk’ around Bingley Arts Centre on January 1;

a history walk around Luddendenfoot on January 5.

Mark Turner, director of Pennine Prospects, said: “If you’re stuck for ideas why not join one of the many guided events taking place or visit the walk, cycle, ride website which has hundreds of routes to choice from?”

Next year’s South Pennines Walk and Ride Festival will take place between Saturday, September 6 and Sunday, September 21.

Mr Turner added: “The South Pennines Walk and Ride Festival, which proved bigger and better than ever before this September, may be over for another year but the online resource is still there for everyone to enjoy.”
