Kirklees Council chiefs are urging the people of Huddersfield to turn out in force to support the Yorkshire Regiment.

The 3rd Battalion will be in town on Saturday for a Freedom Parade.

Soldiers will march through the town centre and there will be various activities to promote the work of the regiment.

The parade sets off from St John’s Road at 10.50am and there will be a ceremony outside Ryman Stationers at the edge of New Street at 11am.

At the end of the ceremony the battalion will parade ‘with bayonets fixed, colours flying and band playing’, accompanied by the West Yorkshire Fire Service Band.

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “We hope people will come along and show their support.”

In addition to the parade the Reserve Forces will be holding a recruitment and promotion event at Mandela Corner near Huddersfield Library and Art Gallery.

This will include an airsoft range where visitors can test out their shooting skills. The range will be open from 10am.

Joining them at Mandela Corner will be councillors Phil Scott and Jim Dodds who are members of the Kirklees Community Covenant Board.

The Community Covenant was launched in Kirklees in June last year and aims to foster community support for soldiers and their families, recognising their service and sacrifice.

The two councillors will be at Mandela Corner between 10am and 4pm to answer questions and hand out literature.

Also on Saturday a new council web page will be launched offering help with housing, employment and health issues for ex-servicemen and their families.
