IT will no doubt come as a shock to many that a Kirklees Council plasterer has earned £60,000 in just one year.

The man – who the council has not named – earned £18,000 from his wage, but more than doubled that by regularly doing 11 hours overtime per week.

Then, on top of that, he reaped a further £22,000 from productivity payments.

Clearly hard work and endeavour should be rewarded, but is this not way over the top?

Many people are just glad to have a job at the moment and will no doubt be doing unpaid overtime just to make sure they keep the job – and the company they work for keeps going.

No extra pay for them. Productivity payments? What are they?

Don’t forget that the plasterers’ extra cash is taxpayers’ money.

Many people would jump at the chance to do paid overtime, but very few jobs now offer that.

So to get a bonus on top of all that when key council services are being cut is once again providing plenty of ammunition for Kirklees critics.

And there’s no shortage of them.
