YOUNG African musicians are on a high note thanks to an instrument donation from fellow music makers in Shelley.

Musicians from the Shelley Music Centre have sent their surplus cornets, trumpets and trombones to the village of Masindi in Uganda to help them set up a youth brass band.

The Ugandan village has enjoyed strong community links with churches in Meltham over a number of years and it was on a visit to Yorkshire that the African church leader, Bishop Stanley took inspiration for the brass band project.

Jamie O’Brien, leader at Shelley Music Centre, part of Kirklees Music School, said: “They already had someone who could teach and a single trumpet but obviously they needed more instruments.

“ We had trumpets and cornets no longer being used and were delighted to help.”

The instruments were refurbished by Huddersfield music retailer, Octave Above and the transport and tax costs were met by Meltham charity shop, Crossroads.

A second case load of instruments is now bound for Africa giving more young people an opportunity to join the new brass band.
