READING the recent letter in your pages regarding payment for four wives to Muslim men under new arrangements from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) I found it difficult to believe that this was possible, although I had read similar accusations in the national press.

I now have the definitive information and am absolutely amazed at its audacity. See below:

New guidelines on income support from the DWP provide for extra payments to Muslim men with multiple wives. This will benefit Muslim men who, under Sharia law are permitted up to four wives. The rules state: “Where there is a valid polygamous marriage the claimant and one spouse will be paid the couple rate (£92.80). “The amount payable for each additional spouse is presently £33.65.”

Income support for all of the wives may be paid directly into the husband’s bank account if the family so choose.

In a country where you or I would be imprisoned for having one extra wife here we have the opportunity to have four under Sharia law.

I feel that the Archbishop of Canterbury has done us all a favour by bringing “Sharia in this country” to our attention because, in light of the above, we know that it is already here and approved by the Government.

I have spoken to Muslim friends who are well integrated into the ways of UK and they are equally appalled at the idea of this medievalism being introduced here.

Most Muslims enjoy the freedom that UK provides. All immigrants to this society enjoy a very good deal compared to almost anywhere in the world. All that is asked in return is respect for this country and its ways.

Wanting to be reimbursed for four wives is not showing respect, but who can blame someone for trying when the Government (DWP) is complicit in the arrangement?

I have written to my MP and to anyone who will listen. I consider this to be a step too far and want something done about it. If no-one will then I intend to make life difficult for those that I can reach.

We need strength in numbers, so I would appreciate any support that may be forthcoming from your readers. This is an intolerable situation that must be changed.
