A GIANT sports barn could be coming to Meltham.

Plans have been submitted to Kirklees Council to build a 46 metre long by 24 metre wide structure next to the existing sports and community centre on Mean Lane.

The massive new hall would be designed to look like an agricultural barn and would sit on the site of the current outdoor multi-use games area to the north of the hall.

The plans indicate that the outdoor games area is too exposed to Meltham’s biting winds and receives little use.

Sports centre bosses now want the site to create a bigger sports hall and then convert the hall into a gym.

Directors at the community centre are also hoping to build a two storey extension on the back of the £1.2m centre, itself less than six-years-old.

They will also improve kitchen and hospitality facilities and build a new viewing platform for spectators.

The sports facilities launched in March 2004 replaced old wooden buildings that had stood for more than 80 years and served the village’s cricket, bowling, soccer and rugby teams.

The current centre comprises a clubhouse, six changing rooms, two for cricket, which overlook the field, a multi-purpose sports hall, referees’ and umpires’ rooms, a bar and a function area for up to 200 people.

The project was the culmination of more than eight years planning.
