YOUNGSTERS from a Lepton school have been learning about being Mayor of Kirklees’ on a visit to Huddersfield Town Hall.

Members of the school council at Rowley Lane Junior School visited Mayor Jean Calvert and were given a fully guided tour of the building and an explanation of the civic significance of the robes and mace.

Seven-year-old Archie Ford, chairman of the council, said he was excited and a “little bit nervous” about meeting the mayor, saying his favourite bit was seeing the concert hall and its big organ.

Archie added that the mayor was very friendly, and after telling the students about the history of the paintings and silverware in the town hall, she had sat down and talked to the students over a drink.
