Town history book unveiled

A RETIRED librarian is to launch her photographic history of Mirfield at the town’s library this Saturday.

Frances Stott, 60, will donate all profits from the book ‘Mirfield’ to charity. The causes to benefit are: Yorkshire Cancer Research, the British Heart Foundation, Kirkwood Hospice and Diabetes UK.

The book, which has 1,100 illustrations, will be launched at Mirfield Library at 10.30am on Saturday.

Frances said: “The book has been arranged along geographic lines encouraging the reader to mentally walk old streets and visit old neighbourhoods. From pubs to shops, streetscapes to parks, mills to maltsters, river and canal to railways, the scenes of everyday life during the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century are well depicted.”

The book carries a foreword by Mirfield-born actor Sir Patrick Stewart. The book costs £25.
