THE benefits of having a direct link to the capital are vast.

It could boost the economy, make it easier to do business, connect more people and bring environmental benefits too.

So it’s good news that plans are in place to look at bringing a direct train line to Mirfield.

If approved, it would be Kirklees’ first rail service to the capital, meaning commuters could be in London within three hours.

It’s not the first time attempts have been made to connect the capital with Huddersfield.

The ongoing debate about a high-speed link remains with predictions that a stop in Sheffield and Leeds would bring £62m to the economy.

But Kirklees would like a bit of that too – and it can be done, because the operator who has submitted a bid to the Office of the Rail Regulator (ORR) for permission to run services direct to the capital has been successful in connecting similar small towns.

They already run a daily service from Brighouse to Kings Cross.

Of course, the Mirfield link could be a long way off, but it’s entirely possible.

And it depends of the public’s support to get it running and keep it moving.
