YOU may recall that last week I mocked Kirklees Council for an official document containing the horrible phrase “robustly estimated”.

Well, far be it from me to single out our friends in Huddersfield Town Hall for criticism.

So this week we move on to our friends up the M62 at Leeds City Council.

My thanks to my colleague Nick Lavigueur for drawing my attention to a press release from the council inviting motorcyclists to a road safety event.

Now what is it that a motorcyclist rides again? I thought it was called a motorcycle, or maybe a motorbike.

But no, according to the press release from Leeds City Council, it’s a “powered two wheeler” or “PTW” for short.

So the council is promoting “the use of PTWs as the smarter travel choice” because “travelling to work by PTW can save a significant amount of time”.

But there are drawbacks to PTWs, as the press release points out.

Motorists, or perhaps that should be drivers of “powered four wheelers”, sometimes don’t pay enough attention on the road.

As the press release advises: “Take an extra second to look out for PTWs”.

It’s sound advice.

What a shame it’s not in English.
