Holmfirth-based environmental educators Fairandfunky had a nice rice surprise for The Welcome Centre.
In September, the group launched the 90kg rice challenge, aiming to sell 90kg of Fair Trade Malawian rice three times over.
The rice challenge was taken on across the area: Fairandfunky led assemblies in schools, facilitated ‘Rice Challenge’ workshops, attended food festivals across Yorkshire and had support from churches and Fairtrade support groups.
Alongside the challenge to sell 90kg of rice, Fairandfunky set up the Fairandfunky rice bucket challenge for people to donate their bag of rice to The Welcome Centre, Lord Street, Huddersfield.
To date Fairandfunky have sold 247 bags of rice and have a bucketful of rice for the centre.
Fairandfunky director Helen Robinson said: “Fairandfunky aims to empower people to take their own little steps to change the world.
“In our workshops we encourage people to think about how their actions can have a positive impact both locally and globally.
“The rice bucket challenge has enabled people to buy rice from farmers in Malawi, and donate to the Welcome Centre, in Huddersfield.”
