Lesley Sullivan talked to the children of Birdsedge Church about the Fruits of the Spirit (from Galatians 5 verses 22-23. The adults heard from John 15 verses 1-17 and 1 Corinthians 13 verses 1-13 to emphasise that love is the greatest fruit – not the here-today-gone tomorrow love we hear so much about in the national press but a solid consistent dependable love, available for all.

Birdsedge Support Group for Kirkwood Hospice was helped in raising £439 by happy lunchers in the church school room on Bank Holiday Monday. The next fund raiser will be a coffee morning in the Church school room on October 18 when Hospice Christmas cards will be on sale.

CLAYTON WEST

Morning worship at the Methodist Church was a service of Holy Communion led by Rev Brian Jenner. He spoke about the healing of the blind man, Bartimaeus. Lessons were read by Jean Heath and Les Barber. Stewards were Rosalyn Beevers and Maxine Lodge and flowers for the communion table were a gift from Rosalyn Beevers. After the service coffee was served by Maxine Lodge.

DENBY DALE

There was great relief for all Denby Dale Rotarians this week when they found their ‘Willie!’ Every year the club takes part in a friendly challenge with members of the Inner Wheel Club for possession of Willie – a garden gnome in the worst possible taste. This year’s challenge took the form of a quiz at the Rotary Club President’s Day and barbecue, which attracted over 30 people. Rotarians emerged triumphant and now hold the eye-catching trophy for a year. Anyone wishing to join the Rotary Club – an organisation with a thriving social life and one dedicated to fund-raising for good causes – should contact John Horrocks-Taylor on 863428.

EMLEY

On Friday afternoon, Jack Hepplestine and Amy Dole were married at Emley Parish Church by the Rev John Marsh.

The Rev Chris Bullimore led and celebrated Sunday morning Holy Communion. Bible readings were by Eileen Roughsedge and Gill Marsh, prayers were led by Dennis Roughsedge and the organ was played by Malcolm Jessop. Shelley Wild gave the sermon based on Luke’s account of the disciples. Refreshments were served. In the afternoon Richard Piper and Maria Davies were married by the Rev John Marsh. Tomorrow’s Sunday morning service will be at 10am when the members from St James’, Flockton will join in a joint Communion celebration.

KIRKBURTON

Mrs Margaret Beaumont and Mrs Phyllis Taylor welcomed the worshippers to Family Communion in All Hallows Parish Church last Sunday. The service was led by Curate the Rev Robert Chambers whose sermon theme was Who do you think I am. Opening prayers were read by the children in the congregation and Mrs Rachel Atkinson gave the reading from the twelfth chapter of St Paul’s Letter to the Romans. Vessels were taken to the altar by Mrs Hazel Ramsay and Mrs Pat Ellis. Pastoral minister, Mrs Betty Cross and Mrs Hilary Berry assisted Mr Chambers at the distribution. Mr and Mrs Denis Goring were sidesmen and took up the collection. Music was provided by the church music group. Refreshments were served by Mrs Freda Crabb and Mrs Joy Elston.

Mrs Hazel Ramsay introduced the guest speaker, Mrs Ann Taylor, when members to the Burton Friendship Club met for their weekly meeting at The Hub on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs Taylor works at the Pain and Injury Clinic at Lepton and she told members about the technique of Indian Head Massage and the various oils she uses in aromatherapy treatment. She answered questions and Mrs Ramsay thanked her. Mrs Stella Ellis won the raffle prize and tea was served by Miss Sandra Spivey and mesdames Heeley and Ellis.

Miscellany make a welcome return to Shelley Emmanuel Church to celebrate its 140th anniversary on Saturday Septembe6 at 7.30pm. An evening of song and laughter with local artistes is guaranteed. Shelley Over 60s Club held their meeting last Thursday when the bingo line and full house were won by Joyce Armitage, The first three numbers on one card was unclaimed and the prize will be carried over. The whist high of 90 was won by Joan Cope, and the low of 64 went to Greta Hinchliffe from seven tables. The club welcomed Ann Horsley and Chris Sheriff as new members. Birthday wishes went to Doreen Baines, Jean Roebuck and Gerald Hawthornthwaite. Raffle prizes were won by Eve Astin, Betty Russell, Colin Littlewood, Bessie Usher and Sylvia Stevenson.

SHEPLEY

Geoff and Margaret Mottram of the Thurlstone Owl Sanctuary will talk about their work with injured owls at Shepley Library and Information Centre, Marsh Lane next Wednesday at 7.30pm. Some of the birds will be on display at the event, organised in conjunction with the Shepley Bird and Wildlife Group. Admission is £1.50. Tea and biscuits 50p.

Sung Mass at St Aidan on the feast of St Bartholomew was celebrated by the Rev Philip Reynolds, who spoke of God not calling us to be famous, but compassionate. Biblical readings were given by Gill Millman and Margaret E Fisher. Tilly Beau Day was baptised during Mass. Refreshments were served by Linda Heeley and Victoria Cox. Sunday August 31 is the start of the week long Patronal Flower Festival at St Aidan.
