BIRKBY and Fartown Community Centre could get a £45,000 revamp if plans are approved.

Kirklees councilors are due to discuss whether to relocate Birkby Children’s Centre from Birkbees Day Care Centre on Old Halifax Road to the Birkby/Fartown Community Centre on Wasp Nest Road, which also houses the library.

A report to councillors claims the current centre suffers from “limited access to shared outdoor space” and becomes “very crowded” because it has no reception area.

The Birkby and Fartown Community Centre already hosts some children’s centre activities and could become a more vibrant place if the centre were relocated.

The council spent £100,000 setting up the children’s centre in 2006 and pays Birkbees £2,000 a month in rent.

Initial consultation has already taken place with the current users of the service.

The council’s Labour-controlled cabinet were due to rule on the plan at Huddersfield Town Hall today from 4pm.
