A gymnastics group is raising the roof - literally - at its current home in Bradley.

Greenhead Gymnastics Club is based at the old St Thomas’ Church in Station Road, Bradley – which currently has scaffolding and tarpaulin covering its roof. The emergency measures were taken on the roof back in February due to storm damage.

And the club has since applied to Kirklees Council to have the slates repaired.

Due to the church being a listed building any repairs are subject to stricter regulations.

But the club has applied for Spanish blue slates instead of the existing Westmoreland slates because they are cheaper and will not affect the visual appearance of the building.

A report submitted to Kirklees Council from the club reads: “We are trying to maintain the building to fulfil its function as a gym and providing a valuable service to Kirklees.

“The Church is not clearly visible from the road and the section of the roof needing repair is not clearly visible as you approach the Church.

“There is a certain amount of urgency in carrying out the repair due to the scaffolding currently in place and the poor state of the remaining slates on this section of the roof.”

A decision will be delegated by Kirklees Council planning officer shortly.
