STEP out of the cold and miserable weather and into a warm kitchen lit by a real fire and experience the wonderful smell of home-made bread this weekend at Colne Valley Museum.

The volunteers at the Golcar museum who make up the ‘Bread Team’ will be demonstrating how to make bread in the traditional way and visitors will be able to buy some to take home for tea.

Jane Lee – a longstanding member of the team, as was her mother before her, said: “There is perhaps more interest nowadays in traditional bread-making than ever before. People are more concerned about what they are eating.

“Of course there are many different ways of making bread, but it’s not as difficult as people might think, and we hope to persuade some of our visitors to have a go when they get home.

“This is one of the things we think is very important at Colne Valley Museum, preserving and teaching traditional skills that might otherwise be forgotten.”

This weekend the team are making brown bread, with flour sourced from Parfitt’s Bakery of Newsome.

The museum will be opening earlier than usual – from 12.30 today and tomorrow – for visitors to come and find out for themselves, and to get warm by the fire, of course!
