PLANS to sell off three car parks in Brighouse have sparked concerns that town centre businesses could suffer.

At the moment Brighouse has some cheap car parks charging just 30p an hour or 60p for two hours.

This price must attract shoppers into the town, possibly at Huddersfield’s expense where parking in council car parks is more expensive.

Getting rid of the car parks may well deter them and perhaps, with less available spaces, Calderdale Council could in time be tempted to push up the charges in its other car parks there.

Councils need to do everything in their power to tempt people into their town centres.

In an age when people think nothing of driving to large out-of-town shopping centres, cutting car parking spaces in Brighouse would seem the wrong thing to do.
