A top town team are thanking their local heroes.

Brighouse Rest Centre gave a toast in tea to mark the end of a successful year’s fundraising for Brighouse Rest Centre.

Staff and customers of Sainsbury’s Brighouse store added their final donation of £120 to bring the total to £3,045.

It was handed to the charity’s secretary, Marlene Travis, and committee member Hilary Weston by store manager Colin Meah and charity co-ordinator Anet (correct) Bottomley.

The money came from the supermarket chain’s Local Heroes scheme which matches cash raised by the store up to £200 at events.

Store staff, including Ruth Ellerby, of the customer services team, helped at a number events including a Christmas lunch where centre regulars received gifts.

Most of the money raised was used to buy and fit an industrial dishwasher which has helped to make life easier for the centre’s team of volunteers.

Money also came in from a cake sale organised by Mary Redhead and a book stall.

Mrs Travis praised store staff and customers for their efforts, saying: “It was a marvellous fundraising effort and I can’t begin to say how grateful we are for Sainsbury's involvement.

“It’s not just about the money. Staff have given their time and effort by helping at the centre which has been very much appreciated. We have been overwhelmed by the store’s support.”

Mr Meah said the store had been delighted to help: “They are a great bunch of people who use the centre and the volunteers who make it all possible.”

The centre will be supported for the next 12 months by Brighouse company IMI Cornelius, while Sainsbury’s  local charity partner is Huddersfield-based the Laura Crane Trust teenage cancer trust.
