THE things they say! John Cameron from the property arm of Admiral Taverns is trying to sell the Little John pub (Examiner, Feb 19), and claims that: “Kirklees has said Admiral can buy the freehold for £25,000 or change the covenant to allow non-pub use for £16,000. A reasonable sum would be a couple of thousand pounds. It seems remarkable that the council are being unhelpful, high-handed, and arrogant. Maybe the council are just taking a harsh commercial view, but it seems mad.”
As everyone in the licensed trade knows, and the Examiner has pointed out recently, the main reason for pub closures is extortionate rents and high-handed arrogance by the likes of Admiral Taverns. Besides, as a Kirklees council tax payer I certainly hope the council IS taking a “harsh commercial view”. It would certainly make a nice change anyway.
Then we have Tesco saying how they would love to put the price of their beer up if only Asda et al would do the same, and present this as a positive move!
Would it be such a good thing if they were to propose putting the price of bottled water or carrots up? A supermarket wanting to make more profit; what a surprise!
