Members of the Methodist Church attended the Circuit service at Shepley.

A special family service at St George’s Church was led by the Rev David Barnes to celebrate saints in general and St David in particular. The service was followed by lunch in the village hall. The meal featured a menu with a Welsh flavour. The event was the first of several being arranged to raise funds towards the celebration of St George’s 150th anniversary in 2013.

HEPWORTH

The Rev Keith Griffin celebrated parish Eucharist at Holy Trinity Church on Sunday morning. The reader was Cheryl Roberts, prayers were led by Jane Selkirk, and Jim Selkirk acted as sidesperson. The organist was Jane Robertson and Sunday School was led by Chris Fletcher and Rebecca Battye. Coffee was served afterwards by Joan Warrender and Mary Kenworthy.

On Friday, the first of six weekly Come to Lunch events was held in the church’s meeting room when soup and bread, followed by tea and cake were served between 12.30 and 2pm. Organised on behalf of the church by Louise Vigor, this week's meal was served by Dorothy McIntosh, Dorothy Walker and Sheena Blunden.

HOLMBRIDGE

A meeting of Three’s Company took the form of a beetle drive, which was led by Carolyn Burley.

Members of the Camera Club held their second open print competition. Gill Sharpe was first and third, while Ian Gold was in second place.

Hilary’s Keep Fit class met on Tuesday.

Midweek Holy Communion at St David’s Church was conducted by the Rev Geoff Bamford. Ian Gold read the lesson.

Members of the Monkey Business toddler group and the Over 60s club met during the week. The Rev Geoff Bamford led the Lent course.

Friday evening prayers were led by the Rev Geoff Bamford.

Parish Eucharist was celebrated by the Rev Steve Dixon. The lessons were read by Judith Roberts and Peggy Whiteley. Thelma Nelson led intercessions and the chalice was administered by Ian Gold. The creche and junior church were led by Judith Roberts. The organist was Eddie Purcell.

HOLMFIRTH

The second Sunday of Lent was celebrated at Holy Trinity Church with 8am Communion led by the Rev John Capstick. Maureen Smelt read from Philippians 3.17-4.1 and Douglas and Norah Beardsell were the sidespersons. The 10.30am Parish Eucharist was led by Rev Val Clarke. Linda Smithers read the Gospel from Luke 13 vv 31-34. Val led the intercessions and Linda Whittaker assisted with the chalice. The Jones family acted as sidespersons and coffee was served in the Gallery Room after the service.

The Inner Wheel Club of Holmfirth hosted a social Quiz Evening at Meltham Golf Club with the Rotary Club of Holmfirth. A pre-dinner table quiz was prepared by Rtn Keith Dyson and Inner Wheel member Bee Rant worked with Rtn Nigel Hinchliffe to present the 60-question quiz. A four man team from Rotary walked away with the first prize and a team of four ladies from Inner Wheel took home the wooden spoons which had been suitably inscribed by Rtn Albert Hobson. Inner Wheel President Ann Lowe thanked the Rotary Club and their partners for joining the evening during which a raffle had been run for the Inner Wheel Charities. President of Rotary Rt Mike Funnell expressed thanks to the Inner Wheel Club on behalf of all the Rotarians.

There is to be a joint Rotary and Inner Wheel Club Spring Ceilidh with pie and pea supper on tonight (Saturday) at 7.30pm in Meltham St Bartholomew’s Church Hall for the Forget Me Not Trust. All are welcome. Tickets are £10 – ring 01484 688217.

HONLEY

Parish Eucharist at St Mary’s Church was led by the Rev David Barnes, who also gave the address. John Adams read the lesson and Diana and Huw Griffiths led intercessions. The organist was Jean Chadwick.

On Saturday evening, Pauline and John Adams and their helpers served dinner for church members and their friends.

On Wednesday evening, the Vicar led meditation for Lent.

MELTHAM

Meltham WI held their meeting on March 2, which was chaired by the President Ann Dick. The tea ladies for the evening were Joan Quarmby and Chris Reeves. The speaker for the evening was Pat Osbourn who gave a talk about Ann Lister of Shibden Hall. This was very interesting and went down through the years about the history of Shibden Hall. The vote of thanks was proposed by Ros Wimpenny. This was the first meeting this year as both January and February was cancelled because of the bad weather and it was enjoyed by all the members.

A robbery occurred at Morrisons, Station Street, on Monday when the victim, waiting at the entrance was approached by two males who threaten violence and robbed him of his mobile phone. Suspect one: white male, 17yrs - 18yrs, 6ft, slim build, wearing grey tracksuit bottoms, cream coloured hooded top with a dark cream diagonal stripe from the shoulder and a 'McKenzie' logo on the left side of the chest, light brown hair. Suspect two: white male, 16yrs - 18yrs, 5ft 9ins, slim build, wearing black pants, grey/cream coloured hooded top.

UPPERTHONG

The prayer breakfast was held at the home of Pat and Les Hopkins.

Midweek Communion at St John’s Church was led by the Rev Geoff Banks, who was also the celebrant. A Lent lunch followed in the meeting room.

Family Communion was led by the Rev Di Ellerton, who was also the celebrant. Sue Legge read the lesson. Sue Dawson led prayers and assisted with the chalice. Ian Greenhalgh was the organist. During the service, the Rev Di Ellerton baptised Elisa Jane Beatrice Wood. Refreshments were served afterwards. In the afternoon, twins James Thomas and Emmy Lucy Millar were baptised by the Rev Di Ellerton and the Rev Sue Brooks.

A service of healing was held on Sunday evening at St John’s Church.

WOOLDALE

The service on Sunday at Wooldale Methodist Free Church was led by David Blakeborough, who took his reading from Mathew and Luke. In his sermon he talked of being prepared for the lead up to Easter. He gave various illustrations on how most of us like an orderly life and when things happen to unsettle us we get worried and anxious. The pianist was Muriel Bennett
