Parish communion form All Saints at St George's Church was led by the Rev David Barnes, who read the from the Gospel according to Matthew. In his sermon, he posed the question: What is a Saint? He referred to stained glass windows in churches depicting saints as thoroughly good people, but also spoke about how the word ‘saint’ was used in places and material things that had nothing to do with sainthood. Jean Oldfield and Helen Dickinson were sidesmen at the service. The organist was Verena Wood.

HADE EDGE

Hade Edge Band is rapidly becoming a centre for excellence in music-making in the Holme Valley, with 200 people visiting the bandroom each week – aged four to 74. HEPWORTH

Parish Eucharist for All Saints' Day was celebrated by the Rev Geoff Bamford at Holy Trinity Church. The reader was Jane Selkirk and prayers were led by Louise Vigor. The organist was Jane Robertson.

This Sunday, the Remembrance Sunday Service begins in church at 9.15am, followed at about 10.10am by a short Act of Remembrance outside at the church lych gate.

HOLMBRIDGE

On Monday, a meeting of Three's Company, a group for elderly and retired people, was led by Carolyn Burley.

During the evening, the Camera Club met for a natural history competition. The winner was Muriel Smith with Chris Newsome in second place and Geoff France third.

Holmbridge Women's Institute luncheon club met in the parish hall.

Midweek Holy Communion at St David's Church was led by the Rev Geoff Bamforth when the reader was Ian Gold.

The Over 60s Club met on Wednesday afternoon. Friday evening prayers were led by Ian Gold.

Parish Eucharist at St David's Church was conducted by the Rev Keith Griffin. The lesson was read by Laura Bartle and Carolyn Burley led intercessions. Helen Woods administered the chalice and the creche and junior church were led by Ben and Helen Cooper. The organist was Eddie Purcell. During the afternoon, a meeting of the Gathering, a group for nine to 14-year-olds, was led by Capt Miek Smithers. Evensong was led by the Rev Geoff Bamford and the pianist was Audrey Brook.

HOLMFIRTH

The song So Wonderful, began praise and worship at Holmfirth Christian Centre's service at the Phoenix centre on Sunday morning. The band was led by Ian Gooch and Elyjoy. The theme of How Great Our God Is was continued by Ian Gooch who spoke on Your Value In Christ's Eyes. The young children 'Explorers' were led by Denyse Rourke and they looked at the parable of the sower in Matthew13:1-23 creating there own garden in little tin foil tubs. They also had fun acting out the parable and reading the story.

Wednesday evening saw a Make It Happen event with cleaning, painting and DIY. A pie and peas supper was served.

Friday was a Night of Fire party to celebrate the Holy Spirit and good food, great company, lots of fun games and prizes were organised by Becky Gooch.

All Saints' Day was celebrated at Holy Trinity with 10.30 Parish Eucharist . The Rev Keith Griffin was the celebrant and he was assisted by Carlton Tinsdeall with the chalice. Neil Sykes read from 1 John 3 1-3 and Linda Whitaker led the Intercessions. Keith spoke about saints and how to define what a saint is. He told us to make space for God in our lives so that he can act within us. There was a 3pm service as Choppards Mission. Refreshments were served after the service by Muriel Wilson and Ann Holmes. This Sunday Remembrance service commences at 10.45 - all welcome.

The morning service at Holmfirth Methodist Church was led by Barbara Rochester. The theme was light. The children were asked why we need light and all the uses of light. There was an all age drama illustrating creation, day and night, flowers, animals, man etc. Some people rejected God, others remained faithful. This took place with effective lighting, the sun and individual lights and finished with a blaze of light, illustrating Jesus coming into the world. The service concluded with prayers and the singing, with percussion, of popular song Shine Jesus Shine.

Kruger's Coffins and the Great Humming Beetle –some byways of local history - will be the intriguing title of an evening talk organised by Holmfirth Civic Society with local historian speaker Ian Dewhurst on Thursday November 20 at Holmfirth Civic Hall at 7pm. Following the success of the Pasta and Opera evenings during the Holmfirth Arts Festival, Holmfirth Art & Music is once again teaming up with Neil Hirst at Café @ Penny Lane to provide two evenings of great food and music. These will be on Friday February 20 at 7.30pm when a Jazz, Jambalaya and Mardi Gras event will feature music and food from New Orleans with the New Orleans Wiggle; and on Friday March 20 (7.30pm) with Supper & Showstoppers, including some of the area’s leading opera singers - Stephanie Ball, Nigel Rothery and Rebecca Parr.Tickets, priced at £25, are available by contacting 01484 688151. HONLEY

Family communion at St Mary's Church was celebrated by the Rev David Barnes. Graham Wardman read the lesson and intercessions were led by Jane and Graham Wardman. The music group accompanied the singing. During the evening, a group of parishioners from St Mary's Church accompanied the vicar at a service in Wakefield Cathedral as part of the Diocesan Day of Prayer on the theme of Investing in Our Faith.

MELTHAM

Meltham and Meltham Mills Band, with over 160 successful years of banding behind it, has a reputation for performing firstrate concerts, and is available for all types of event.Phone 01484 358451 for more details. UPPERTHONG

Midweek communion at St John's Church was led by the Rev Geoff Banks, who was also celebrant.

St John's Church held its annual Winter Fayre in Holmfirth Civic Hall with a wide variety of stalls and morning coffee and light lunches being sold. All proceeds were for church funds.

Early communion was led by the Rev Di Ellerton. Later, members of St John's Church attended All Saints', Netherthong, for a service led by the Rev Di Ellerton. The Rev Geoff Banks preached the sermon.

WOOLDALE

The service on Sunday at Wooldale Methodist Free Church was Led by John Blamires from the Gideons International. He read from Philippians and then described the work of the Gideons, speaking of how many bibles have been distributed in many countries abroad, and how they have changed the lives of many people. The society’s work here is also based on giving out New Testaments to school children and placing bibles in hotels, hospitals and prisons. They have been doing this for many years, he said.

Family worship at the Methodist Church was led by Kath Beetlestone. Coffee and biscuits were served afterwards. Evening worship was conducted by the Rev Charlotte Lorimer. The organist for the day was Nigel Morris.
