ELLAND pupils have been given a confidence boost to speak in front of big crowds.

Twenty-four Year 7 pupils from The Brooksbank School, Elland, have taken part in a new initiative called Find My Voice.

The aim of the project was to develop the confidence and presentation skills of youngsters in their first year at secondary school by working with a group of adult, professional speakers.

It culminated in a showcase performance at the school which featured a centenary theme including quiz shows, a song and dance double-act and a television interview with a puppet replica version of long-serving teacher, Mr Dave Nixon.

Pupil Sarah King, 12, said: “It was hard work, but it was really good fun. It was also great being able to put my interview skills into practice.”

Ben Riley, 12, and Henry Foulkes, 11, brought laughter from the audience with their quiz-show double-act.

Assistant head and project leader, Rebecca Tickell, said: “It has been wonderful watching the skills of the pupils develop in leadership, planning, communication and teamwork.”

Among the speakers were Roger Masterson, Lesley Hunter, Angela Whitlock, Karen Asemper and Reg Atkinson.

Brooksbank head teacher Kevin McCallion said: “The feedback has been very positive from both pupils and parents and we are looking forward to the young people who have taken part this year becoming mentors for our new intake in September as we roll the initiative out for another year.”
