Burning sausages caused a fire alert in Berry Brow yesterday.

Four fire engines from Huddersfield, Holmfirth and Meltham were called to a ground floor flat in Wain Court at 2.15pm.

Firefighters arrived to find the flat full of smoke with no-one inside.

A pan of burning sausages had been left on the hob. Firefighters threw out the pan and cleared the smoke with fans.

The owner had just nipped out and returned to find firefighters in his flat.

Smoke detectors had alerted neighbours who raised the alarm.

Huddersfield Fire Station watch commander Chris Bell said the incident showed the importance of smoke detectors. No fire damage was caused.
