THE Gift Of Music is the perfect name for a new bursary scheme set up by Kirklees Music School.

For the scheme has pledged to fund music tuition for an initial 20 youngsters. Yesterday the school launched a new sponsorship scheme kick-started by money raised at last month’s Stadium Spectacular. Barclays Bank has also weighed in with £3,000 which means the first youngsters will get their lessons from September.

Any of the hundreds of children who were there would have been able to tell you what a huge difference music has made in their lives, but not every family can perhaps afford the cost of ongoing tuition. Making sure every child who wants to be involved can be takes time, money and resources.

Providing lessons to all those who want them is at the heart of this scheme.

Britain’s Got Talent contestant Michael Fish knows all about music and the excellence of Kirklees Music School. He was part of it from the age of six to 19 and now has an international career as a percussionist.

He, like Music School principal Thom Meredith, wants to ensure that as many youngsters as possible get the chance to enrich their lives, have their confidence boosted, their skills enhanced and the chance to learn what it is about music that can change lives. A gift indeed.
