I AM afraid that Mr Syrad’s “correction (Mailbag April 7) of the caption to the Home Guard photograph itself needs correction.

The Home Guard (formed in 1940 as the Local Defence Volunteers) was stood down in December 1944, and disbanded in December 1945. However, it was in fact reformed, on a reduced scale, in 1950, but was disbanded again in 1955. In both its wartime form, and in the 1950s, the Huddersfield Home Guard wore the badge of its affiliated regiment, the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment. The caption to the photograph is therefore perfectly correct. The collection of the Tolson Memorial Museum contains the uniform of Mr Bratman, who served in both wartime and postwar Home Guards.
